Shirl Alexander VanDyke
Shirl Alexander VanDyke, 78, of East Crossbow Lane, Slippery Rock, passed away at his residence at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, after a long illness.
He was born in Murrinsville, Butler County, Jan. 26, 1939, to Norman Leroy and Verda Mae (Sloan) VanDyke.
Shirl was married 59 years to Dorothy Louise (Jones) VanDyke, whom he married June 14, 1958. He was a compassionate and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Shirl had worked for Universal Rundle and General Electric in Grove City. He was a member of Harrisville United Methodist Church and served his country in the Marines from 1956 to 1958 and then was in the reserves for four years.
Shirl was a member of the Elks in Grove City.
Along with his wife he is survived by his children, Thomas L. VanDyke, of Jamestown, Pa., and Jacqueline (George) McIntire of his residence; a sister, Helen Martin, of Grove City; two grandchildren, Nicholas (Cherie) McIntire and Meredith McIntire; a great-grand-daughter; brother-in-law, Carl (Loretta) Jones; step brother-in-law, John (Carol) Kennedy; stepsister-in-law, Karen (Tom) Kennedy; and his nephew, Troy (Ginger) Jones; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Shirl was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Eugene Martin; and the following siblings, Ruth (Merle) Hoffman, Earl (Lois) VanDyke, James (Dorothy) VanDyke, Ray (Janet) VanDyke, Harry (Bonnie) VanDyke, Norman (Gail) VanDyke, his twin sister, Shirley (Bill) Travis, Lucille (Dennis) Gutherie, Donna (John) Crum, Betty (Bob) Magyar and Paul Vandyke; and a nephew, Eric Jones.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Shirl's nephew, Jeffrey VanDyke, for his compassion and caregiving.
VANDYKE — Visitation for Shirl Alexander VanDyke, who died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m., Saturday, also at the funeral home. Pastor Jeff Canter of Harrisville United Methodist Church will officiate.Burial will follow at Prairie Cemetery in Harrisville.
