Walter A. Sloan, 85, of Pine Township, Grove City, passed away at 11 p.m. Sunday at the Grove City Medical Center following a two-month illness.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1929, in Cherry Valley Township, Butler County, to the late Henry Lycurgus Sloan and Annie Bell McGinnis Sloan.

He married Eileen C. Redick on July 2, 1954, and she passed away on Dec. 27, 2006.

Walter retired in 1994 as a pattern maker from Cooper Energy Services, Grove City, where he was employed for 26 years. He formerly was employed at Book Davis, Grove City, where he was a carpenter.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Grove City, where he formerly was a deacon and sang in the church choir. He participated in many church activities throughout the years.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

He enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, gardening, landscaping, playing table games and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his six children, Mark Sloan and his friend, Laurie Jack, of Harrisville, Laurie Freel and her husband, Gary, of Lincolnville, Dane Sloan and his wife, Carol, of Grove City, Amy Tomson and her husband, Dave, of Mercer, Jay Sloan and his wife, Jodi, of Grove City and Beth Clouse and her husband, Mike, of Grove City; his 14 grandchildren; and his sister, Alice Altmire of Eau Clair.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Walter was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Sloan; his two sisters, Betty McCurdy and Margaret “Emeline” Ross; his two brothers, Harold B. and Donald E. Sloan; and his daughter-in-law, Dianna Sloan.

Sloan — Visitation for Walter A. Sloan, who passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 103 Cranberry Road, Grove City, with the Pastor David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the East Unity Church, Cherry Valley Township, Butler County.
