City woman accused of stealing hot dogs, cheese

CENTER TWP — A repeat shoplifter was arrested Sunday after she was caught with a purse stuffed with hot dogs, cheese and other items allegedly stolen from a Route 8 discount store, state police said.

Kristin D. Hilliard, 30, of Butler was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft and released on her own recognizance.

Police said the manager at the Dollar General about 3:30 p.m. spotted Hilliard take items from the store and stash them in her purse.

A search of the purse turned up a pack of hot dogs and hot dog buns, a block of cheese, three packets of ranch dressing, snack mix, lunch snacks and soft drinks, court documents said.

Her purse also contained several clothing items from the store. In all, the stolen property amounted to $57.55.

While normally a summary or misdemeanor offense, retail theft is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property’s value when a defendant has at least two prior arrests for the same crime.

Hilliard has three prior shoplifting convictions, including one last month in Butler, according to Butler County Court records.
