Charles Dunaway Jr.

Dunaway

Charles W. Dunaway Jr., 82, formerly of Butler, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11, 2022.

He was born in Dunbar, Pa., on Sept. 10, 1940, to Charles W. Dunaway Sr. and Inez Mae McCann.

Charles grew up in Dunbar, where he attended Connellsville High School. After high school, he attended Slippery Rock University, where he received a B.S. in health and physical education. Charles then went on to West Virginia University to earn his master’s degree in safety/health science.

Charles “Buck” began his career at Butler Senior High School, where he taught drivers education. Later, he and his wife, Judy, moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was employed by Republic Steel Corporation as a safety engineer.

In 1967, Buck found his calling when he was hired at Butler County Community College as a professor of health and physical education. This was the beginning of Pioneer athletics. Buck’s passion for sports, his gift for coaching and love for his students, led him further to become BC3’s first athletic director. Buck used his passion to develop and coach men’s/women’s tennis, men’s/women’s basketball, golf, cross country, women’s volleyball and baseball, and women’s softball. One of his crowning achievements was hosting the NJCAA Cross Country meet on BC3 main campus. Buck retired as athletic director, coach and professor in 1999.

Charles W. Dunaway Jr. received endless awards for his contributions to athletics and education: Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame; Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame; Slippery Rock University Hall of Fame; Outstanding Educator 1986; WPCC Coach of the year 1973, 1974, 1978, 1987, 1988 and 1989; and Founding Father of PCAA. Of all of his success, Buck’s proudest achievement was the success of his student athletes.

Charles W. Dunaway Jr. is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Judy R. Colteryahn Dunaway; his devoted children, Jodi Ellen (Ray) Lassinger, Matthew Charles (Gina) Dunaway and Mark Allen (Jennifer) Dunaway; and his adoring grandchildren, Gabrielle, Victoria and Cole Lassinger, Gracie, Reese and Smyth Dunaway, and Kate, Marin and William Dunaway.
