Verna Elaine Mahan

Verna Elaine Mahan, 87, of Boyers passed away Monday at Grove City Medical Center with her daughter and devoted caregiver by her side.

Born Feb. 19, 1931, in Doland, S.D., she was the daughter of the late James Martin Hoffman and Cora May Tanner Hoffman.

Verna spent most of her working life in the employ of various pharmacies beginning with Peoples Drug Store in Harrisburg, where she met her late husband, John Kirk Mahan, whom she married May 5, 1956.

While taking some time off to raise her children, she continued to work full time while caring for her husband and her mother at home. Upon retirement, she moved to Slippery Rock to be closer to her daughter.

Verna was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.

She loved spending time with her family and attending church. She was a huge NASCAR fan and her favorite driver was Dale Jarrett.

When she could no longer care for herself, she lived with her devoted caregiver, Kathy Lumley, and loved spending time with Kathy's family as well.

She is survived by her son, the Rev. James K. Mahan and his wife, Robin, of Stamford, Conn.; her daughter, Julie E. Powell of Slippery Rock; her grandchildren, Judith Mahan of Stamford, Jenny Kaplan and her husband, Bryan, of Pittsburgh, Joshua Powell and his wife, Emily, of Erie; and her great-grandchildren, Evan and Aiden Kaplan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, John Kirk Mahan, who died Oct. 28, 1994; and her son-in-law, James Richard Powell.

MAHAN — The family of Verna Elaine Mahan, who died Monday, March 12, 2018, will receive friends from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Funeral services will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. William Mumaw, pastor of Center Presbyterian Church, presiding.Interment will follow in St. Peter's (Long's) Cemetery, Halifax, Pa.Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St., Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
