STATE COLLEGE —Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock fired a three-round total of 214 to force a three-way tie for first place, then carded a birdie on the par 5 18th hole at Penn State University to capture his age division at the PGA Junior Series this week.
His rounds of 66-72-76 also turned out to be the best for the tournament.
BOSTON — Ralph Houk, who managed the powerhouse Yankees of the early 1960s to two World Series championships, died Wednesday. He was 90.Houk also managed the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers in a 20-season career that spanned three decades.Red Sox spokesman Dick Bresciani said Houk's grandson, Scott Slaboden, told the team Houk died at his home in Winter Haven, Fla.Houk managed 3,157 games and won 1,619 with a winning percentage of .514. After leaving the Yankees in 1973, he went to Detroit and managed the Tigers from 1974-78. His final stint in the dugout came with Boston from 1981-84.
NEW YORK — Southern California has sent back its copy of Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy. The Heisman Trust, however, has yet to decide whether it will be asking the former USC star to return the famous bronze statue he won in 2005.The president of the Heisman Trophy Trust, New York-based attorney William J. Dockery, said in a statement Wednesday that the organization has not determined when it will decide whether Bush should be stripped of his Heisman.USC said it is returning its copy of Bush's trophy to distance itself from Bush in the wake of severe NCAA sanctions.
SINTON, Texas — Clint Hartung, a one-time New York Giants prospect who scored as a pinch-runner on Bobby Thomson's 1951 pennant-winning homer, has died. He was 87.A family spokesman said Wednesday Hartung died July 8 in Sinton. No details were available.Hartung's six-year major league career never took off as expected, however. The Giants shuffled him from pitcher to first base to the outfield in 1950, then he moved exclusively to the outfield the next season.From 1947-52, he was 29-29 in 112 games, including 72 starts, with a 5.02 ERA. He had a .238 career average with 14 home runs and 43 RBI.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New Jersey plans to go all-in on Atlantic City casinos and bow out of horse racing.Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday announced the findings of a panel that reviewed the state's gambling, entertainment and sports industries.The governor said he agreed with the panel's recommendations of a nearly complete state takeover of Atlantic City's casino district, closing the Meadowlands Racetrack and selling the Izod Center.

ATLANTA — Nate McLouth is back with the Atlanta Braves after missing 33 games with a head injury. He started in center field for Wednesday night's 6-4, 12-inning home loss to San Diego.Meanwhile, third baseman Chipper Jones is returning after missing three starts with a mild left hamstring strain.McLouth has been out since suffering his injury June 9 at Arizona, when he collided with Jason Heyward in the outfield. The former Pirate is hitting only .176 with three home runs in 170 at-bats.
DES MOINES, Iowa — Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano will pitch out of the bullpen for Triple-A Iowa today.Zambrano arrived in Des Moines on Tuesday and was supposed to be available to pitch Wednesday night.Iowa manager Ryne Sandberg says Zambrano worked out Wednesday morning, but an Iowa Cubs spokeswoman says Zambrano won't be in uniform until today because an undisclosed change in travel plans.Zambrano was suspended without pay for three days and later put on the restricted list following a dugout confrontation with Derrek Lee on June 25.
ATLANTA — San Diego Padres second baseman David Eckstein was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain.Eckstein sustained the injury while running the bases in Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves.It is Eckstein's second injury to his right calf this season. He is hitting .279 with one homer and 22 RBI.
