Winterfest will return Saturday to Moraine

Food, music, demos planned

WORTH TWP — For the fifth year in a row, Winterfest at Moraine State Park is hoping to bring more attention to the park’s winter activities.

“We’re really trying to show that, yes, (the park) is open year-round,” said Jake Weiland, assistant park manager.

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore.

It will feature a chili cook-off, horse-drawn carriage rides, chain saw carving, ice carving and ice fishing demonstrations, a snowshoe workshop, cross country skiing, live music, crafts and a family birding hike.

There also will be an appearance by Iceburgh, the mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Smokey Bear.

Food will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the Portersville EMS.

Weiland said organizers also stepped up the live music offerings, booking popular Pittsburgh folk rock group Nameless.

The event has attracted more people each year.

“It’s been growing,” Weiland said.

Last year, there were 3,000 attendees. Weiland hopes that 3,200 come this year.

Additionally, organizers hope for good, wintry weather.

Two years ago, the temperature was in the 50s, leading to the cancellation of activities such as ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Last year, there were a few snowflakes but it was cold, very cold.

“But, hey, it’s Winterfest,” Weiland said.
