Record riot
ADAMS TWP — Winning isn't everything.
Just ask Courtney Shields, Hilary Cummings, Brianna Keelan, Anna Marie Bilott and Morgan Morrison of the Butler Country Club swim team.
Oh, they want wins. But they want records, too. Tuesday at the Treesdale Golf and Country Club, they got both.
During the Western Pennsylvania Country Club Swimming Association Championship meet, the quintet combined to snap two league relay records that stood for 11 years.
Shields, Cummings, Keelan and Bilott swam the girls ages 13-to-17 200-meter medley relay in 2 minutes, 7.17 seconds to beat Valley Brook Country Club to the finish line and to shatter the previous record of 2:08.89 set by South Hills Country Club in 1996.
They also broke the record in the preliminary round, swimming a 2:08.06.
"Our goal coming in here was to break the records,"Shields said. "We definitely like to swim against the clock."
The 200-meter freestyle relay team of Morrison, Keelan, Shields and Bilott also broke the previous meet record of 1:56.44, set by Edgewood Country Club in 1996, twice Tuesday. Their fastest time was 1:54.45, set during the preliminaries.
"I'm not at all surprised by what these girls have done,"Butler Country Club swim coach Ellen Pullekines said. "They work so hard and they train all year."
Butler Country Club had 25 swimmers — male and female — qualify for the championship meet. BCCfinished second among the 23 country clubs competing with 103 points. Edgewood Country Club won the event with 118.
Besides the two relay wins, BCC's lone first-place finisher was Cameryn Forbes in the girls 8-and-under 25-meter freestyle.
The leaguehas held a championship meet annually since 1979. BCChasn't won the Earl J. Birdy Jr. Championship Trophy since 1984.
Most of the girls swim for the Butler County Family YMCA team as well.
Bilott, Keelan, Cummings and Morrison teamed to set the leaguerelay record times in the 12-and-under division in 2005 as well.
Pullekines, 18, swam competitively for Butler Country Clubuntil two years ago, when a back injury forced her to give it up. She was assistant coach under Matt Galante for BCClast season.
When Galante could not return this year, Pullekines became head coach with former BCCswimmer Zach Reiser becoming her assistant.
"When these girls broke our country club's 13-to-17 relay record, they broke a record that I helped set,"Pullekines said. "Believe me, I can appreciate how fast they are."
In the medley relay, Shields swam the backstroke, Cummings the breaststroke, Keelan the butterfly and Bilott the freestyle.
"We're interchangeable, though,"Keelan said. "We can all swim the different strokes."
When Bilott dove into the pool to swim the last leg of the medley relay finals, the final Valley Brook swimmer was right there with her.
"I love that,"Bilott said. "It's challenging because you don't want to let the rest of your team down."
Cummings, who attends Shady Side Academy along with Bilott, competes in field hockey and lacrosse in school, as well as swimming.
Keelan and Morrison both attend Butler High School while Shields is a Mars student. Shields is 15 while the other four girls are 14. They can be relay teammates together for another three seasons.
Shields swims for Mars High School and gets up at 4:30 a.m. each day during the high school season to practice with her team at Pine-Richland's pool. After school, she goes to the Butler County Family YMCA for practice with that team.
"It's an extra four or five hours each day, but it's worth it to me,"she said. "I'm hoping to get a college scholarship in this some day."
