E. Richard DeMatt, 60, of Philadelphia, formerly of Butler, passed away on Feb. 27 after a six-year struggle with kidney cancer.

Richard graduated from Pennsylvania State University. His career in the restaurant industry included owning the Marigold Dining Room in the University City section of Philadelphia. Most recently, he was a pastry chef at the Gold Standard, also in Philadelphia.

Richard wanted to be remembered as a survivor in the face of hard situations, an activist and someone who struggled for growth and change to the end.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph DeMatt and Mana Christofano DeMatt.

Richard is survived by his brother, Joseph W. DeMatt and his wife, Kristine, of Butler; two nieces, Kelly Levere and her husband, Mike, of Harmony and Johanna McBride and her husband, Casey, of Grove City; and a great-nephew, Wyatt Wade Levere.

<B>DEMATT</B> — Family and many friends of E. Richard DeMatt, who died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, honored him in the days before his death and will continue to celebrate his life.
