SLIPPERY ROCK — Butler County Special Olympians have made marks in their first year of bocce competition.
At Sunday's competition at Slippery Rock University, the bocce doubles team of Kristen Lindsey and Jeff Walsh took gold while the teams of Don Monn-Tim Spence and Dottie Bowen-Mike Mezynski won silver medals.
In the individual skills competition, Miles Moore and Matt Simon won the gold while Betsy Cable and Jack Bowen won the silver.
Six bocce athletes will compete in doubles at the next Special Olympics event at Villanova University in November.
Other Butler County athletes at the event were:
Soccer team competition: Clint Atkinson, Rosalind Burns, Madeline Burns, Melissa McKinnis, Nicole McKinnis, Tom Hastings and Carla Steffy, bronze medal
Team volleyball: Joe Osche, Dan Harlan, Kari Fallecker, Ryan Burgoon, Anthony Sciullo and Larry Fend, fourth
Individual skills volleyball: Val Jones, Michael Olexsak, gold: Marci Neill and Johanna Nicolson, silver; Judy Bell, bronze
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University men's soccer goalkeeper Brandon McQuillen was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week on Monday.Last week, McQuillen totaled six saves in shutout wins over Kutztown (3-0) and California (Pa.), a 1-0 victory.
JACKSON TWP — Senior Elyse Dobrick and junior Rose Snyder of Seneca Valley have been named to the 2005-06 Scholastic all-American Team by USA Swimming.They made the team by carrying a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and competing in the 2006 Speedo Spring Champions Series at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., last March and the Summer Champions Series in Buffalo, N.Y., in July.
