Special Olympics sectional coming to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK — Special Olympics Pennsylvania athletes will travel to Slippery Rock University for the annual Western Fall Sectional this Sunday.

Athletes from 13 Western Pennsylvania programs will compete in team and individual events in five sports including boccie, long distance walking/running, powerlifting, soccer, and volleyball.

More than 120 coaches and 400 volunteers from the surrounding community will help with the day’s activities.

It will kick off with opening ceremonies in the Aebersold Student Recreation Center at 9:15 a.m. Competitions will begin at 10 a.m. and run until closing ceremonies at 4:45 p.m.

Events in soccer and team volleyball will be qualifiers for state Fall Games at Villanova University in November.

Spectators are welcome to visit any of the competition venues. There is no charge to attend.

For a schedule of events, contact Nicole Jones at 610-630-9450, ext. 231, or at the event contact Patrick Gentile, 412-389-3580.

Volunteers to help are still needed. Anyone interested may contact volunteer manager Matan Cohen at mjc1454@sru.edu.
