1-year-old girl dies after falling in poolMERCER — The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office says 1-year-old Pheylin Cline died early Thursday morning, a day after she wandered from a relative’s home in Mercer.The Volant girl was found a short time later in a swimming pool and taken to a hospital, where she later died.An autopsy had been scheduled for Thursday.

Spending jumps for Senate primary raceHARRISBURG — Spending is growing by leaps in Pennsylvania’s hotly contested Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and could push past $13 million.A super PAC that supports Joe Sestak and a national party committee that backs Katie McGinty each reported Wednesday that they’re putting hundreds of thousands of dollars more into the race. The primary election is Tuesday.Of the nearly $11 million reported spent in the race, McGinty and her allies are outspending Sestak and his allies two-to-one, or about $6.8 million to about $3.4 million.Sestak is seeking a rematch with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey after losing to him in 2010. The Democratic establishment is pulling for McGinty.

SW Pa. among worst in air qualityBEAVER — A study from the American Lung Association says Beaver County and southwestern Pennsylvania are among the worst areas in the country for air pollution.The the association released its 2016 State of the Air findings and gave the 12-county Pittsburgh metropolitan area failing grades in several areas.The report says the region was ranked the eighth worst in the country for annual measures of fine particle pollution, and 26th worst for smog ozone. Beaver County received a failing grade for ozone smog levels, one of nine area counties that earned that grade.Coal-fired power plants, such as ones owned by FirstEnergy, were listed as significant contributors to regional air pollution. A FirstEnergy spokeswoman says the company invests millions annually to maintain environmental control technology.

Death investigated at construction siteNORTH HUNTINGDON — Authorities say the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of 25-year-old Tariq Shabaz who was working inside a North Huntingdon home on April 8 when he fell 23 feet from the second floor onto an interior stairwell.At a hospital, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said he died of injuries to his head, neck and extremities.OSHA investigators say Shabaz worked for Pierce Contracting. They say they’re investigating whether safeguards were in place.
