NEW ALBANY, Ind. — The Point Park University women's basketball team defeated Indiana University-Southeast 76-51 Monday night in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals.

The victory not only advanced the team to the title game tonight against Asbury (Ky.), it set a program record for wins in a season with 24.

Butler High graduate Katresa Savisky contributed eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Pioneers (24-6) are led by former Butler County Community College coach Tony Grenek.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Both SRU men's and women's cross country teams earned United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations honors as well as several individual members receiving Division II all-academic teams.On the women's side, the team of 43 members, had a 3.29 GPA. It needed just a 3.0 average and to score a point at the regional meet.Shannon Byerly, Stephanie Case, Abby Michaelian, Jenny Picot and Kara Styles were all named to the Division II all-academic team.On the men's side, the team had a 3.49 GPA.Travis Arrigoni, Michael Beegle and Seneca Valley graduate Eric Geddis were named to the Division II all-academic squad.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior forward Devin Taylor used a pair of double-doubles in victories over California and Indiana (Pa.) to earn the PSAC-West Player of the Week.Taylor had 14 points and 14 rebounds against the Vulcans, then followed up with a 26-point, 11-rebound performance against Crimson Hawks.

Butler grad Jake Hilliard and Slippery Rock grad Kevin Rummel each chipped in with 13 points, but BC3 fell to CC-Beaver County 139-61 in the semifinal round of the WPCC playoffs on Saturday.CCBC improved to 28-0 and is ranked No. 1 in the nation for NJCAA Division II.Butler grad Bill Smith added six rebounds and six assists for the Pioneers (8-20).

NEW YORK — Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has been placed on injured reserve with a concussion.The team announced the move Monday, retroactive to Feb. 22.The NHL’s reigning MVP was diagnosed with a concussion on Sunday, two days after he slammed back-first into the end boards during a win over Florida.Malkin, whose head snapped back when he hit the boards, initially suffered short-term memory loss, but is improving, coach Dan Bylsma said on Sunday.
