Estranged son accused of stealing from father
Butler police Sunday arrested an estranged son accused of stealing a pickup truck from his father’s home in Slippery Rock Township.
Alexander J. Welter, 21, of Clay Township allegedly stole the 1999 Ford Ranger on Friday after showing up at his father’s house on Saniga Road, state police said.
The victim, Jeffrey Welter, told police that it was the first time he had seen his son in several years.
“The victim also related his son has a known drug problem and had recently been released from jail,” according to court documents.
The next day, police said, investigators learned that Jeffrey Welter’s bank debit card also had been stolen and used without his permission at Thompson’s Country Market in West Sunbury.
Butler police Sgt. Brian Grooms, while working early Sunday morning, knew to be on the lookout for the stolen pickup, valued at $5,500. He spotted it parked in the 400 block of West Penn Street.
Grooms arrested the defendant, who was in the driver’s seat. He was searched and found with a syringe and a baggie corner containing white powder, documents said. The suspect, police said, admitted the substance was cocaine.
He is charged with forgery, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies. He is also charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and access device fraud, both misdemeanors.
He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.
Butler police on Monday also filed their own case against Welter, charging him with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
