Gabrielle Berkopec, a senior at Mars High School, has been chosen to compete for the North American Select softball team that will represent the United States at Cup 2006 Jan. 13 to 15 in Schiedam, The Netherlands.
The selection is based on fast-pitch talent and attitude. Teams from The Netherlands, France, England, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark and Austria, as well as the Dutch Olympic athletes, are scheduled to appear.
A tour of Amsterdam is planned, as well as a three-day trip to Paris for sightseeing.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Lucas Glover captured his first PGA Tour victory Sunday with birdies on the last two holes, making a 40-foot putt from the fringe and a 35-foot bunker shot on the last hole to win the Funai Classic at Disney.
SAN ANTONIO — Jay Haas won his second Champions Tour title in three weeks Sunday, shooting a second straight 5-under 66 for a two-stroke victory over Tom Purtzer at the SBC Championship.Haas finished at 14-under 199 and won for the third time in his career at Oak Hills Country Club, site of his Texas Open victories in 1982 and 1993, two of nine PGA Tour wins.
CAREFREE, Ariz. — Harry Dalton, who spent more than four decades as an executive with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers, died from complications of Parkinson's disease on Sunday. He was 77.
LYNDHURST, Ohio — Ted Bonda, the former Cleveland Indians owner who hired Frank Robinson as baseball's first black manager, died Sunday of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 88.
STATE COLLEGE — Danny Morrissey, a sophomore guard on the Penn State basketball team, dislocated his left knee and is expected to miss four to six months.Morrissey, who was injured during practice on Friday, had a similar injury to his right leg during his freshman year of high school. He started 10 games as a freshman last season when Penn State went 7-23 and averaged 7.7 points while leading the team with 53 3-pointers.
