Rosemarie Smith
Rosemarie Eury Smith, 86, of Butler, passed away Oct. 30, 2022, at Butler Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with lymphoma.
Rosemarie was born in Butler on April 16, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Stella (Denny) Eury and the third child of eight Eury children.
Rosemarie married the love of her life, Donald E. Smith, on Aug. 31, 1957. She and her husband raised five children in Evanston, Ill., while he was a Northwestern University professor. Don preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1985. After this devastating loss, Rosemarie went on to rebuild a vibrant life as a widow and never remarried. One of the things comforting her family at this time is the knowledge that Don and Rosemarie are finally reunited after 37 years apart.
She was a 1954 graduate of Butler High School, and a 1957 graduate of the Butler School of Nursing.
Rosemarie had a long career as a registered nurse at hospitals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Illinois. She returned to Butler following the death of her husband, and enjoyed being part of the Red Hat Society and her nursing school card club. Her classmates from her nursing school days were a remarkable group of women, who remained close friends all of their lives, sharing so much laughter whenever they got together to play cards, marching in the Butler Thanksgiving parade, going on bus trips together, or just talking on the phone. Rosemarie cherished her friendships so much and was a wonderful neighbor to her many friends in her condo complex at Crown Pointe at Clearview.
Rosemarie was a kind, giving, faith-filled woman with a will of steel. She was a devoted Catholic who attended Mass regularly throughout her life. She was a member of St. Peter parish in Butler.
When she put her mind to achieving anything, it was as good as done. Rosemarie’s sense of humor and love for adventure made her an amazingly fun and funny sister, mom, grandma and friend.
Rosemarie is survived by her children, Linda and her husband, Alec Bender, of Birmingham, Mich., William Smith of Birmingham, Mich., Marianne and her husband, Bill Meehan, of Butler, Michael Smith and his wife, Alyssa Gladstone, of Round Rock, Texas, and Thomas Smith of Superior, Colo.
She is also survived by 11 beloved grandchildren, Michael, Lisa and David Bender, Kristy (Stephen) Lewis and Braeden Smith, Ryan (Stephanie) Bock, Sean Bock and Brennan Bock, Don and Rachel Smith, and Caleb Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Lana and Kail Lewis.
Further, Rosemarie is survived by four siblings, William (Shirley) Eury, Don (Lois) Eury, Dave (Linda) Eury and Joyce Heil; many cousins, nieces and nephews; dear friends; and her beloved dog, Barley.
In addition to her husband and parents, Rosemarie was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard “Dick” Eury, Robert “Bob” Eury and Fred Eury Jr.
