SLIPPERY ROCK - Kevin Weidl didn't throw a football last week. Chris Morgan didn't practice last week.

Both made up for it Saturday night.

Weidl threw two touchdown passes to LeRon McCoy and Morgan rushed for 187 yards and a TD as Indiana (Pa.) University football team cruised to a 34-13 over Slippery Rock University at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

"Kevin injured his elbow last week against Shippensburg and we held him out of practice," IUP coach Frank Cignetti said. "Morgan didn't practice because we were waiting all week for results from an MRI done on his knee.

"Fortunately, the knee didn't show a tear."

Instead, the Indians (4-2, 2-0) went on a tear.

IUP rolled up 506 yards of offense on The Rock. Besides Morgan's production, junior Stan Grandy carried eight times for 156 yards.

Grandy began the season as IUP's third-string tailback. He moved up on the depth chart when returning 1,300-yard rusher Mike Jemison broke his leg two weeks ago.

While The Indians piled up 372 yards rushing, SRU managed just 75. The Rock entered the game averaging 222 yards rushing per game.

"They controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball," SRU coach George Mihalik said. "They ran the ball anywhere, any time they wanted. And we couldn't."

The 21-point margin of defeat was The Rock's worst home loss since it fell to Clarion 54-28 in 1996.

"I didn't anticipate this happening," Cignetti said. "We came in here expecting to be in a very tough, physical football game."

On the Indians' first snap of the game, Seneca Valley graduate Mike Jennings sacked Weidl and recovered his fumble at the IUP 41-yard line.

The Rock offense went three-and-out and punted. Field position was gained, however, and an 18-yard Josh Kniess punt return set up a 27-yard Ryan Daniel field goal and a 3-0 SRU lead.

Morgan scored on a 35-yard run on the final play of the first quarter for IUP, but Rock quarterback Nate Crookshank responded with a 40-yard pass to Luke Wetzel for SRU's lone big play of the night to set up another Daniel 27-yard field goal.

"Being held to field goals on our two possessions there - those were victories for their defense," Mihalik said.

McCoy caught a 20-yard touchdown pass and Brad Whitacre added a 32-yard field goal for IUP before the end of the half.When the Indians took the second-half kickoff and drove 82 yards in five plays, with McCoy catching a 43-yard scoring pass, they had a 24-6 lead and control of the game.Because of penalties, SRU (3-4, 1-2), which managed only 218 yards of offense, ran nine consecutive plays from inside the IUP 10-yard line late in the game and couldn't score.IUP had 16 penalties for 121 yards and had three touchdowns called back because of them. Rock opponents have taken 34 penalties for 310 yards the past two weeks - and won both games."Our defense has put together two straight excellent performances," Cignetti said. "I'm sure we deserved those penalties. That's an area we have to shore up."The Indians had shut out Shippensburg, 17-0, last week."They were physically better today," Mihalik said. "We have four linebackers out, so we're a little thin at that position right now, but I don't want to make excuses."I'm disappointed we weren't more aggressive and physical out there."What's our mental state going to be now? How are we going to respond to this?
