Man charged in domestic incident

A Jackson Township man is accused of strangling a woman late last month.

Township police filed charges Saturday against Corey J. Shoup, 39, including felony strangulation and misdemeanors of simple assault and criminal mischief.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Shoup on the charges Oct. 30 and sent Shoup to Butler County Prison in lieu of $30,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police responded to Shoup's home on the 100 block of Hickory Hill Lane for a reported domestic disturbance.

The investigating officer said he saw Shoup “push and shove his way past” the woman as he attempted to leave the residence.

Police said they spoke with the woman, who had marks on the front of her neck. Police said her T-shirt's neck hole was ripped.

The woman told officers a verbal argument escalated, and she accused Shoup of choking her and tearing her shirt, as well as throwing things around the home. She told police her phone was broken as a result.

“(The woman) added that during Shoup's aggressive actions of placing his hands around her throat and shoving her, she felt in immediate fear for her life,” police said.

A preliminary hearing for Shoup has been set for Nov. 9 before District Judge Wayne Seibel.
