Borough council approves traffic changes in Zelienople

ZELIENOPLE — Residents will soon see traffic changes in the borough.

Peach Street will become one-way northbound from Pine Street to Hazel Street.

Borough council approved the designation Monday evening after nearly two months of discussion.

“It will help parking on Pine Street,” borough Police Chief Jim Miller said. “It’s just so jammed there when church is going on at St. Gregory’s (Roman Catholic Church). Everyone can still continue to go both ways on Pine Street, but everyone will go more away from the church and it will keep traffic away.”

Council members and borough officials cited a recent traffic study in making the change.

“It just really makes sense, and it’s safer to make it that way,” borough manager Don Pepe said.

Drivers turning from West Beaver Street, which is Route 68, onto Peach Street are faced with a blind spot on their right side.

Officials said the blind spot may confuse drivers making that turn.

Miller said the amount of traffic that flowed through the area isn’t as much in the past.

Stop signs also were approved to be added on a number of streets.

Stop signs will be installed at these intersections: both eastbound and westbound lanes of McKim Street approaching Peach Street; both northbound and southbound lanes of Perry Way approaching Evans Road; both northbound and southbound lanes of Linden Street approaching Pine Street. and both eastbound and westbound lanes of Hazel Street approaching Peach Street.

Both the one-way street designation and stop sign installations could happen within a week, borough officials said.
