Coat drive to distribute more than 1,000 winter items

More than 1,000 cold-weather items will be given out Friday.

Bundle Up Butler says that more than 190 families preregistered for the annual winter clothing drive hosted each October by the Center for Community Resources.

Devin Cunningham, project coordinator for the Center for Community Resources, said the drive gets plenty of donations from local people, churches and corporations, so it will have more than enough to give out at Memorial Park.

“We ask for the preregistration so we make sure we have enough of each size and style, men’s, women’s, children’s,” Cunningham said. “Preregistration is over, but that doesn’t mean people won’t be able to (get items) that day. They can show up during the event, and if we have the coat available, we’ll make sure they get it.”

The Bundle Up Butler drive through will take place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park, north of Penn Street, west of downtown Butler. Cunningham said this is the third year for the event, which has been a drive through-style give away since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.

People who registered will check in with CCR staff at the park, before driving to the nearby Miller Shelter to receive a bag filled with the coats they signed up to receive.

The items not used at the drive will be held by the CCR, and given out to people when necessary.

“We give out coats through February or March, just because of how the weather is,” Cunningham said. “Whatever is left over when we start the new cycle, it just gets added to the pile for the next year.”
