Nowakowski MVP in PSAC title game

Butler graduate Kim Nowakowski had a team-high 24 points and added nine rebounds and four blocked shots to earn MVP honors and lead the California (Pa.) women's basketball team to a 63-59 victory in the PSAC Championship game Saturday.

Cal (26-4), ranked fourth in the NCAA East Region, won its fourth PSAC championship in the past five years and earned the league's automatic berth to the national tournament.

SEATTLE — NFL Most Valuable Player Shaun Alexander has agreed to a $62 million, eight-year contract to remain with the Seattle Seahawks, his agent said Sunday night.Jim Steiner said the deal is the richest ever for an NFL running back and will pay the league's leading rusher over $15.1 million in guaranteed cash.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The New York Jets and quarterback Chad Pennington agreed to a restructured deal Sunday after weeks of talks, a move that provides salary-cap relief while giving him a guaranteed $3 million in 2006 with $6 million in playing time bonuses.The Jets also extended the contract of offensive lineman Pete Kendall and cut 35-year-old center Kevin Mawae, a longtime fixture in their line.

WASHINGTON — A new inquiry into the fatal shooting of Army Cpl. Pat Tillman during combat in Afghanistan will examine possible criminal negligence by fellow soldiers involved in the friendly-fire incident, according to Pentagon officials.Tillman, 27, left the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He died in April 2004.

MIAMI — Despite a bogey-bogey finish, Tiger Woods closed with a 3-under 69 for a one-shot victory over David Toms and Colombian rookie Camilo Villegas in the Ford Championship at Doral, his second PGA Tour victory of the year and the 13th time he has successfully defended a title.Woods finished at 20-under 268 and never lost his lead.Woods, who hit a wedge over the 17th green to make his first bogey of the final round, was in the right rough on the daunting 18th hole, leading by one shot. But Toms ran a 60-foot birdie putt some 10 feet past the hole, then missed the par putt for his first three-putt of the week.

Kobe Bryant will be the centerpiece of the new-look USA Basketball team that is expected to improve upon a disappointing bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics.Bryant joins Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and 20 other players selected Sunday for a possible spot on the world championship and 2008 Beijing Olympic teams.Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade — all members of the 2004 Athens team along with Anthony and James — also were selected to the roster. They'll be joined by Gilbert Arenas, Shane Battier, Chauncey Billups, Chris Bosh, Bruce Bowen and Elton Brand.
