Woman charged in death

Her vehicle struck, killed man on bicycle

A Butler woman has been charged with felony homicide by vehicle in the September death of a bicyclist.

Butler City Police filed charges Friday against Susan M. Ekstrand, 27, whose vehicle struck and killed Henry Sinopoli, 76, of Butler, while he was riding his bicycle Sept. 8.

Ekstrand also has been charged with a misdemeanor count of involuntary manslaughter as well as two traffic violations.

Following the crash, which occurred around 7:55 a.m. at the intersection of North Washington and Brady streets, Sinopoli was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he died Sept. 10.

According to charging documents, Ekstrand remained at the scene, called 911 and rendered aid. Police said she also spoke with police following Sinopoli's departure.

Ekstrand was read her rights before she spoke with officers.

“Ekstrand stated that she stopped for the stop sign and then proceeded,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. Ekstrand said that when she entered the intersection, she hit Sinopoli.

During their conversation, investigators gathered a more-detailed timeline from Ekstrand. She told officers she had stopped at the sign. She remembered reaching into a Dunkin' bag for a muffin at the time.

“Ekstrand ripped a piece off to eat it and continued through the intersection because she did not view anyone else at the intersection,” police said. “Ekstrand then saw the bicyclist 'out of nowhere.'”

According to officers, Ekstrand claimed to be going no more than “a couple” miles per hour.

Police said upon arrival, they found Sinopoli bleeding from a head wound, and his head was positioned on the curb.

Police said they were able to review footage of the incident from the security camera of a business on West Brady Street.

Police said the video shows Sinopoli enter the intersection, noting he is heading in the wrong direction on the one-way street. Police also noted Sinopoli enters the intersection without stopping.

Police said Ekstrand is seen in the video, and the movement of her vehicle contradicted her initial statement to police.

“Ekstrand did not stop at the posted stop sign,” said the investigating officer in charging documents. “Ekstrand's vehicle is seen with brake lights on, slowing toward the intersection. The vehicle slows briefly prior to entering the intersection.”

As of noon Monday, Ekstrand had yet to be arrested on the charges. Once arrested, she will be arraigned before a district judge, issued a bail amount and scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Judge William Fullerton.
