Karns City upgrades include new track
KARNS CITY — The Karns City School District in 2000 made life a little easier for runners and for those who watch them.
The district upgraded its track to an all-weather surface, realigned the drainage system and installed an artificial surface on the field.
It updated the home bleachers and installed new visitor bleachers. The $1.98 million project also added a press box to the track and field area.
Superintendent Larry Henry said it was time to update the track area because in wet springs athletes couldn't use the facilities.
A 72-inch culvert for drainage has reduced the problem of sitting water, he said.
During the summer of 2005, the district added modular classrooms to its elementary schools.
The classrooms are wired to the main buildings and house special subjects such as art and music, Henry said.
There is one building with two classrooms at Chicora Elementary and two small buildings at Bruin Elementary.
"Really, it was an academic benefit," Henry said.
The district's enrollment is about stable, Henry said, so he doesn't expect any major building projects in the next five years.
But, he said, the district will continue to maintain its buildings and renovate where necessary.
For instance, the high school gym bleachers will be upgraded, he said.
