Richard L. Hiles
Richard L. “Dick” or “Snuffy” Hiles, 90, formerly of Sugar Grove, Pa., and Clermont, Fla., passed away Thursday at the Rouse Warren County Home.
He was born March 6, 1924, in Bruin, a son of the late Robert McKinley and Zelma (Young) Hiles.
Dick served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the 201st Port Co. He received his B.A. in English from Slippery Rock University, and then went on to receive his masters in English from the University of Pittsburgh. Dick started teaching at Bruin Elementary School and then went on to become principal at the Lottsville, Sugar Grove, Lander and Russell Elementary Schools, retiring in 1987.
Dick was a member of the Sugar Grove American Legion, Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department and the Masonic Lodge 190 in Groveland, Fla. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and traveling extensively throughout the United States.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marion Kendall Hiles, who he married Aug. 17, 1963, in Marienville, Pa.; two sons, Richard M. Hiles (the late Kim Hiles) and Robert A. (Amy) Hiles, both of Erie; one sister, Lucille McAnallen of Butler; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Trevor and Abby Hiles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert M. Hiles Jr. and Gerald Hiles.
HILES — Friends of Richard L. “Dick” or “Snuffy” Hiles, who died Thursday, May 1, 2014, will be received on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 314 N. Main St., Youngsville.A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lander United Methodist Church in Lander, Pa., with the Rev. Mark Hurst, pastor, officiating.
