Talk about a deserved milestone.

Butler High School varsity wrestling coach Scott Stoner may experience one Tuesday night.

Stoner, in his 22nd year at the helm, is sitting on 299 career dual match victories with the Golden Tornado.

This man is the epitome of a high school coach.

Any aspiring coach would do well to use him as a role model.

Stoner built the Butler wrestling program almost from scratch.

The program made its debut in the 1991-92 school year. The team was 3-20 over two seasons before Stoner took over in 1993-94.

With 10 dual match wins this season, Stoner will have put together 14 double-digit victory campaigns at Butler, including the last eight in a row.

On the road to 300 wins, his teams have lost fewer than 150 duals.

He’s also taken his team to the WPIAL team tournament eight years in a row.

While those numbers are all well and good, Stoner and the Tornado wrestling program are about so much more.

Watch and listen to him while he sits on his chair during a match and one can see his passion for the sport come out. Stoner genuinely feels the joy and pain of each win and loss his wrestlers endure each night.

Butler could win a match or tournament by an overwhelming margin and the man will point out opportunities his kids may his missed in the match rather than sing the praises of his team’s accomplishment on the scoreboard.

At times, that seems a little rough.

In reality, it’s the insatiable hunger and desire this man has for his wrestlers — and the program — to get better.

Those traits filter on down to the wrestlers themselves.

Don Geibel, a former Butler wrestler, returned to the program a few years ago and is heading a junior high team that’s developed into a consistent feeder system for the high school.

T.J. McCance, Butler’s first 100-win wrestler, returned to the program as an assistant coach. Others have done so before him.

After two decades of coaching, the intensity has never left this man. If anything, it’s gotten stronger.

While 300 career wins is monumental — no other Butler coach has ever done such a thing and only an elite group of WPIAL wrestling coaches have — Stoner knows there is work to be done.

Butler has never defeated North Allegheny.

Butler has produced one WPIAL champion — Cole Baxter — but has yet to produce a PIAA champion.

Stoner has this program on solid ground.

He’s had it there for a while.

Hopefully, when the final horn sounds and win No. 300 is in the books, Scott Stoner takes a few moments to enjoy the moment.

Talk to any of his wrestlers and assistant coaches — current or former — and they’ll tell you the same thing.

He’s earned it.
