SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior center and Seneca Valley graduate Brandon Fusco was invited to the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.
Fusco is the first SRU player invited to the combine, which features more than 300 of the top college players in the nation.
The combine will be Feb. 23 through March 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.
The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Fusco is ranked fifth among draft-eligible centers by cbssports.com and is the only Division II player ranked among the top five at any position.
WEXFORD — Butler High graduate Alex Evanoff, a 165-pound junior wrestler at Waynesburg University, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week after grabbing wins in his last two bouts: 9-0 over Mercyhurst's Austin Roland and a pin of Tommy Patterson from Muskingum (Ohio) College.Evanoff's record is 13-5.
WASHINGTON — A U.S. Senator is asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate “misleading safety claims and deceptive practices” in the selling of new football helmets and reconditioning of used ones.In a letter dated today — a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press — Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., tells FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz that helmet companies “appear to be using misleading advertising claims” and that “some helmet reconditioning companies may be falsely selling used helmets as meeting an industry safety standard.”
NEW YORK — Two massage therapists sued Brett Favre, saying they lost their part-time jobs with the Jets after complaining about sexually suggestive text messages from Favre.Claiming they were subjected to sexual harassment and job discrimination, Christina Scavo and Shannon O'Toole are seeking unspecified damages from Favre, the Jets and a Jets massage coordinator.The lawsuit comes five days after the NFL fined Favre $50,000 for not being forthright in an investigation into allegations that he sent lewd text messages and photos to former Jets game hostess Jenn Sterger when they both worked for the team in 2008.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mark Visentin made 22 saves and Canada beat the United States 4-1 in the semifinals of the World Junior Hockey Championships Monday.Curtis Hamilton, Quinton Howden, Ryan Johansen and Zack Kassian scored for Canada, which plays Russia for the gold medal Wednesday. Russia beat Sweden 4-3 in a shootout earlier Monday.The U.S. will face Sweden for the bronze, seeking its first medal on home soil. The tournament has been staged four previous times in the United States.
PITTSBURGH — The AFC East champion New England Patriots will play in Pittsburgh for the second successive season in 2011.The Steelers' schedule, firmed up once they clinched the AFC North by beating Cleveland 41-9 on Sunday, also includes Tennessee, Seattle, St. Louis and Jacksonville at home, plus their three division rivals.Pittsburgh will play at San Francisco, Arizona, Indianapolis, Houston and Kansas City besides AFC North opponents Baltimore, Cincinnati and Cleveland.The Steelers will play their out-of-division games against the NFC West, AFC South and AFC division champions New England and Kansas City. The Patriots beat the Steelers 39-26 on Nov. 14.
