MCKEES ROCKS — The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating a rooftop blaze at a high school undergoing renovation near Pittsburgh.

Firefighters say the flames at Montour High School in Robinson Township were quickly brought under control.

The focus of the investigation is an air-conditioning unit.

There were not students at the school, because they're attending classes in another district school until next year, when the $37.5 million renovation project is scheduled to be finished.

PITTSBURGH — A suspect in the shooting of a Pittsburgh-area police officer during a home invasion this month has been released from jail and had all charges against him dropped — the second time that's happened to a suspect in the case.Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said further investigation led detectives to drop charges Thursday against Travis Evans, 19, of Wilkinsburg, after they determined a witness had identified the wrong man.The decision to release Evans came shortly before the remaining suspect in the case, 18-year-old Marcus Andrejco-Jones of Rankin, was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing.First Assistant District Attorney Chris Connors told The Associated Press that although Evans had been identified by one of the home invasion suspects from a photo lineup, “subsequent investigation into his alibi determined he wasn't involved.” Connors wouldn't detail Evans' alibi, except to say it “checked out.”Andrejco-Jones' mother has claimed that he, too, has an alibi — saying he was at home watching “Dancing With The Stars.”

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania state troopers made 17,695 arrests last year for driving under the influence, the ninth straight year the department has set a record.The figures released Thursday represent a 5 percent increase over 2009.One factor is a wider deployment of drug recognition techniques. The 1,450 drug influence evaluations they conducted last year represented a 29 percent increase over the prior year.The number of alcohol-related crashes that troopers investigate fell slightly last year, to 4,595.

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is close to rolling out a pilot program to allow sales of hard liquor at wine vending kiosks inside grocery stores.WGAL-TV reported Thursday that the agency plans to test the sales in about five or 10 locations, possibly starting in the next few weeks.The station says some of the few dozen machines now operating are selling only a couple of bottles per day.The machines require buyers to swipe their identification and breathe into a sensor to make sure they're old enough and sober enough to purchase alcohol.

BEAVER FALLS — Investigators are starting a fresh search for a Western Pennsylvania college student who disappeared in January.A new search began Thursday for Geneva College freshman Devon Minor.Authorities last searched for the Philadelphia-area man in February when the area was covered in snow. Police said they wanted to search the area before foliage thickens and limits visibility.The engineering major was last seen on January 20 at a campus cafeteria. Minor's friends and family say before his disappearance Minor posted a Facebook message about having a problem and saying nobody could help him.
