NEW WILMINGTON — Butler County products helped the Westminster College men's (176.5-108.5) and women's (139-112) swimming and diving teams to wins over Penn State-Behrend last Saturday.

On the men's side, Seneca Valley graduate Dan Gutmann won the 100-yard freestyle (49.14 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.24) and also helped the Titans take first in the 200 medley relay (1:36.36).

For the women, Butler product Jordan McElhaney took first place in the breaststroke (1:14.43), while Slippery Rock graduate Kelsey Reott was on the winning 200 medley relay squad (1:55.98).

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have re-signed free agent reliever Jason Grilli to a two-year contract worth $6.75 million.The 36-year-old Grilli has enjoyed a career renaissance in Pittsburgh since originally signing with the Pirates in July 2011. He went 1-6 with a 2.91 ERA in 64 games in 2012 and struck out 13.8 batters per nine innings, fourth-best in the National League.The signing also gives the Pirates some flexibility in the bullpen next year in case it ever decides to part ways with closer Joel Hanrahan.Grilli has spent the majority of his career as a middle reliever but has struggled staying healthy until arriving in Pittsburgh. He has been a mainstay in the seventh and eighth innings with the Pirates because of his ability to get strikeouts in key situations.

DENVER — Mike MacIntyre turned around the San Jose State football program in short order and will be asked to do the same at the University of Colorado.On Monday, MacIntyre signed a five-year deal to coach the Buffaloes and will be introduced at a 4 p.m. MST news conference at Folsom Field.His hiring ends a two-week search by Colorado that included a rejection by its first choice, Butch Jones.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have claimed quarterback Brian Hoyer off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.Hoyer was with the Steelers for three weeks while Ben Roethlisberger was injured. After a standout career at Michigan State, Hoyer spent his first three NFL seasons with New England before being released by the Patriots on Aug. 31.

SEATTLE — While he may not exactly fit the Mariners' model of relying on young prospects to rebuild the franchise, 34-year-old Jason Bay could fill a significant need for Seattle in the 2013 season.
