SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's Derick Fiedler has been named PSAC Male Field Athlete of the Week.The junior earned the weekly award after winning the seven-event heptathlon last weekend at Edinboro. He won the event with an NCAA provisional mark of 4.870 points, best score in the PSAC and fourth best in the nation thus far.
PITTSBURGH — LaMarr Woodley is trading football cleats for bowling shoes.The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker is among the new owners involved in the PBA's Professional Bowling League that kicks off in the Detroit suburbs next month.Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens and Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul are also part of the new venture.Woodley, who bowled as a kid while growing up in Saginaw, Mich., will be the celebrity owner of the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits. Woodley says he was introduced to the PBA by Paul during a charity event.The eight-team league held a draft last month and kicks off its inaugural season as part of the PBA Detroit Winter Swing from Jan. 19-27.
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to the Cincinnati Reds and acquired pitcher Trevor Bauer from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team deal involving nine players.Center fielder Drew Stubbs was sent from Cincinnati to Cleveland as part of the trade announced Tuesday night.In addition to Stubbs, the Indians received Bauer, the No. 3 pick in the 2011 draft, and right-handers Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw from the Diamondbacks.Cleveland shipped Choo, infielder-outfielder Jason Donald and cash to the Reds, while sending left-handed reliever Tony Sipp and first baseman Lars Anderson to Arizona.The Diamondbacks also received minor league shortstop Didi Gregorius from Cincinnati.
NEW YORK — Kevin Youkilis is about to get a different look at the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry.The hard-nosed Youkilis, who helped personify Boston’s championship teams over the past decade, on Tuesday became the latest former Red Sox star to switch sides and land in Bronx. The free agent reached a deal that filled New York’s immediate need for a third baseman to fill in for injured Alex Rodriguez.The one-year contract for $12 million is pending a physical.
