Details of the Mitchell family tombstones are pictured at North Side Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, in Butler Township. The tombstone of Joseph Mitchell, a son of Lewis Z. Mitchell, who died young, contains symbols relating to his life. According to Margaret Hewitt, the special collections librarian at the Butler Public Library, the anchor was a sign of Christian hope, the downward pointing hand was the hand of God summoning someone to heaven and also the sign of an unexpected death and the book was a sign of knowledge.
