Panel lists park projects

Issues addressed at Preston Park

BUTLER TWP — A volunteer committee tasked with developing priority projects for parks in the township submitted its report Monday, identifying 10 projects the group thinks township officials should consider doing in the next five years.

Greg Sloan, the chairman of the Parks Project Development Committee, told the commissioners Monday, “Hopefully this acts as a guide for you to use. We think of it as a five-year action plan for the township to use.”

The top priority is equipping Preston Park with restrooms, Sloan said. Currently the park lacks these facilities, which the committee’s report says affects its ability to host activities like high school events.

Ranked second, for similar reasons, is expanding parking at Preston Park. The report says a shortage of parking already has affected events like Shakespeare-in-the-Park performances.

Third and fourth are recommendations that the township install an entrance sign at Sawmill Run Park, and expand parking there as well.

Other projects recommended by the committee include making road repairs and picnic shelters at Preston Park; installing security and event lighting in the township’s parks; razing the Preston House and the Well House to limit rising maintenance costs at Preston Park, and making overall administrative changes such as creating a new Butler Township Parks Department with a paid parks administrator.

The report does not include financial projections for any of the projects, but does note that fundraising would be necessary in a more detailed breakdown regarding the top three projects.

The committee’s list of projects was developed using the township’s parks master plan, which was published in October 2014.
