Supervisors to vote on range
CRANBERRY TWP — The township planning commission Monday night gave its final approval to a shooting range complex.
But the approval doesn’t mean the project, the Ellwand Shooting Sports Academy, will be built. Rather, the commission only makes a recommendation to the township supervisors, who have the final say.
The supervisors could vote on it Thursday night.
If approved, the complex will be on 22 acres on Route 19 near the Park fire station. Plans call for the facility to be more than 170,000 square feet.
The shooting complex originally included an outdoor archery range, but that was nixed at last week’s planning commission meeting because officials were worried about noise coming from the property.
Township resident Steve Harold attended the commission meeting Monday night and voiced his concerns over noise and lighting issues.
Harold said he will soon have a newborn baby and he is worried about noise, especially from the parking lot, waking up his infant.
Harold said his concerns primarily are slamming car doors or headlights shining into his home because the facility is scheduled to be open until 9 p.m. every day except Sunday.
“It’s so close I could throw a football at it,” Harold said of the range’s proximity to his home.
However, architect Fritz Baehr promised Harold that he and owner Dave Gemperle are committed to working with residents on their concerns.
“It is certainly our intent to be a good neighbor,” he said.
Planning commission member Jim Colella echoed those sentiments and said the township’s planning staff has worked with the project’s developers to address noise issues.
“They’ve mitigated our concerns in regards to the sound,” he said.
The supervisors are expected to discuss the project further on Thursday.
