Fred J. Baehr Jr.

Fred J. Baehr Jr., 85, of McCandless Township died Sunday morning.

Born March 18, 1930, in New Orleans, La., he was a graduate of Jesuit High School in 1947, Tulane University in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and St. Louis University with his Juris Doctor in 1968. He was a member of the Missouri and Pennsylvania bars, as well as the US Patent Bar.

He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army Air Force with his duties including surveyor, tail gunner and honor guard.

He was a professional land surveyor for the state of Louisiana and had worked at New Orleans Public Works, Chemstrand in Pensacola, Fla., where he designed and built a golf course side home, and Monsanto in St. Louis, Mo.

He moved to Export, Pa., in 1970, working at Westinghouse Research and Development Center in Churchill. He wrote patents for the nuclear, mechanical and defense divisions.

Fred retired from Westinghouse in 1992, designing and building a retirement home in Keowee Key, S.C., where he lived until the summer of 2013, moving to Vincentian Villas in McCandless.

He was a devoted member of the Catholic church, serving on the parish council at St Mary's in Export. He was an avid golfer, sailor and skier, enjoying a wide group of friends. He was a soft-spoken true Southern gentleman, bringing his gentle nature to the North.

He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Edith Sweeney Baehr; his son, Fritz Baehr of Mars and his children, Angela Baehr of Wexford, Jacob Baehr of Butler and Sarah Baehr of Cuyahoga, Ohio; his daughter, Ellen and Dan Noble of Hollywood, Fla., and their children, DJ Noble of Davie, Fla., and Katie Garrett of Tampa, Fla.; and his daughter, Katie and Robert Wood and their children, Nicole Curtin, Brandon Wood and Tyler Wood, all of Buffalo N.Y.; and his 13 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Montegut of Metairie, La.; her son, John Montegut of New Orleans, La., and her daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Dupont of Memphis, Tenn.

BAEHR — A private funeral mass for Fred J. Baehr Jr., who died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, will be at St Kilian's Church in Mars.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Francis Catholic Church of Walhalla, 103 W Mauldin St, Walhalla, S.C. 29691.Arrangements are under the direction of McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars.
