'Esther the Musical' staged in Zelienople

Xerxes, King of Persia, is played by Brian Louttit of Valencia in “Esther the Musical,” which will be staged Saturday and Sunday at St. Peter's Reformed Church in Zelienople.

ZELIENOPLE — “Esther the Musical,” written by Valencia resident Jeannie Allen, will be staged at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Reformed Church, 314 E. Grandview Ave.

In its eighth production, the musical reflects the Old Testament story of one woman who was inspired by God and changed the course of history.

The role of Esther is played by Allen’s daughter, Mary Phillips of Baden, whose husband, Scott, serves as stage manager. Their two children are also in the show.

Sam Bartley of Valencia plays the role of Mordecai, as he has for eight years, and the villain, Haman, is played by Jay Toogood of Butler. Toogood has also portrayed that role for the last eight years.

The role of Xerxes, the King of Persia, is filled by Brian Louttit of Valencia. He started with the show five years ago doing bit parts and has worked his way up to one of the lead roles through his acting and singing. His two daughters are also in the show.

The Broadway-type musical features 18 original songs, all written by Allen, in different styles including operatic, pop, jazz, Jamaican, Hebrew and ballads.

Allen is a professional pianist, vocalist and teacher with more than 100 original songs and four albums to her credit.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children. Tickets are available by calling the church at 724-452-8120 or Bea Barna at 724-776-2419.
