BUTLER TWP — Tyler Kotch of Butler was named Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division II Player of the Year while the Golden Tornado's Ed Swierczyk was named coach of the year.
Kotch scored 61 goals as Butler finished 15-2, earning the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
Butler's WPSLA first-team selections were goalkeeper Alex Hill, defender Nick Elliot, midfielders Kotch and Cole Harvey and attacker Cody Conklin.
Midfielder Pat Hitchan, attacker Cody Bachman and defender John Noel were second-team selections.

PENN TWP — Troy Loney, a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams with the Pittsburgh Penguins, will be the celebrity golfer at the 23rd annual St. Barnabas Charities Golf Open June 7 at Butler Country Club.Registration is still available. The morning field tees off at 7:45 a.m., the afternoon field at 12:45 p.m. Cost is $375 per golfer and proceeds benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund.
NEW CASTLE — Rob McClellan of the Butler Country Club and Ryan Sikora of Pittsburgh Field Club teamed up to capture the Adams Golf/ Cutter & Buck Pro-Pro Championship at New Castle Country Club Monday.The duo carded a 64 to win by three strokes.
YORK — The Pittsburgh 3-Rivers Volleyball Club's Fort Duquesne 16 team finished in second place at the Keystone Open Championships Saturday and the Keystone Regional Bid Tournament Sunday.Three of the nine players, Alex Karika (setter), Cate Seman (middle hitter) and Meghan Drambel (outside hitter), are from Seneca Valley. The team is led by BC3 coach Rob Snyder.By finishing second in the bid tournament, the squad qualified for the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship, which will be held June 30 to July 3 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev.The championship tourney was used as a seeding event for the bid tournament.The team, made up of sophomores, was the only 16-and-under squad to medal in both events.
ARLINGTON, Va. — Nicklas Backstrom's contract is another long-term investment for the Washington Capitals: 10 years, $67 million.On Monday, the Capitals announced their new deal with the Swedish center, a reward after a season in which he set career-highs with 33 goals and 68 assists. The 101 points ranked fourth in the NHL. Backstrom's contract means the Capitals have locked up two of the league's young stars for many years to come. Alex Ovechkin is about to enter the third year of a $124 million, 13-year deal.The 22-year-old Backstrom has yet to miss a game over three NHL seasons. He had been scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods has added the British Open to his summer schedule.Woods has a chance to become the first player in the 150-year history of the British Open to win three times at St. Andrews, where golf's oldest championship will be held July 15-18.He added the British Open to the schedule on his website.Woods, who withdrew from the final round of The Players Championship on May 9 with a neck injury, also has the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the AT&T National at Aronimink on his schedule.He has yet to enter the Memorial, where he is the defending champion.
PARIS — Martina Navratilova has a tiring schedule lined up for the French Open — radiation therapy for cancer, playing in a senior doubles event and calling matches on TV for Tennis Channel.Navratilova says that she is in her second week of treatments after being diagnosed this year with a noninvasive form of breast cancer and having a lumpectomy in March. She went public with her illness last month.The 53-year-old Navratilova has been practicing at Roland Garros with doubles partner Jana Novotna ahead of the four-team mini-tournament they'll participate in during the second week of the French Open.
