Curtain goes up on 'Sleeping Beauty'
PITTSBURGH — In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will begin its season with one of the world's greatest classical ballets, "The Sleeping Beauty," Friday through Sunday at the Benedum Center, 719 Liberty Ave.
The ballet features choreography after Marius Petipa, with staging and direction by Terrence S. Orr. Also featured are costumes and scenery originally designed by theatrical designer Peter Farmer, plus Tchaikovsky's score, performed live by the PBT Orchestra.
Considered "the father of classical ballet," Petipa choreographed more than 50 ballets, including "Swan Lake," "La Bayadère," "Don Quixote" and "The Nutcracker."
Tchaikovsky's score was one of three composed for a Petipa ballet and is viewed as his finest ballet score.
The curtain goes up for a student matinee at 11 a.m. Friday. Regular shows begin at 8 p.m. Friday, at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
