Strong winds Wednesday night caused a large tree to topple over, crushing the roof of a mobile home on Pry Road in Cherry Township

Three people were inside but no one was hurt, barely.

Cody Slater and his girlfriend were in the bedroom when the tree came down above him and into the 70--foot, single-wide trailer, said Chief Matt Wilson of the West Sunbury volunteer Fire Department.

The couple, who was watching a movie on television, was hit only by insulation from the bedroom ceiling.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Wilson said.

The tree was knocked down about 8:45 p.m., hitting live power lines before crashing atop the home just off Route 308.

Slater, who rents the home, lives there with this girlfriend and a friend of the couple’s. They notified 911, Slater then called the home’s owner, Jim Snyder.

“I didn’t hear anything at the time,” Snyder said. He lives next door but was in the other side of his house in the living room watching TV.

He got an immediate eye full when he walked over for an inspection of the 25-year-old home.

“It was a basic mess,” Snyder said.

Firefighters contacted Central Electric Cooperative, which sent a crew to shut off power.

“The renters were not allowed back in,” Wilson said, “because the home was way too unstable from the damage.”

Authorities said the occupants will be staying with relatives for the time being.

A damage estimate was not available. Both the tenants and owner had insurance, Wilson said.

“I’m thinking the trailer is totaled,” Snyder said. “But thankfully, nobody was hurt.”
