Woman killed in 1-car crash

Road recently had treatment

PARKS TWP, Armstrong County — Police are investigating whether rain on a newly treated road caused a crash Monday evening that killed a 43-year-old Westmoreland County woman and injured two others in southeastern Armstrong County.

Susan Lynn Miller, 43, of Vandergrift died just a mile or so from her home after she lost control of her 1997 Ford Taurus on Route 66 about 5:50 p.m., authorities said.

Miller, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out of the car, according to Parks Township police. The car landed on its roof after the crash.

Armstrong County Coroner Robert Bower said Miller died instantly of massive head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. No autopsy was conducted.

Two passengers in the car, both wearing seat belts, were able to get out of the wrecked vehicle on their own.

The passengers, who authorities did not immediately identify, were taken to undisclosed area hospitals; their conditions were not known this morning.

Patrolman John Acre, the investigating officer, said Miller was traveling north when her car crossed the center line at Garrys Ferry Road.

The car went across the southbound lane and struck an embankment, flipping upside down.

Police are investigating if weather and road conditions contributed to the crash.

It was raining at the time and the township had recently treated the road with tar and chip, "a combination of stone and oil,"Bower said.

Police accident reconstruction specialists were to continue their investigation today.

The Dunmire-Kerr Funeral Home in Vandergrift is handling funeral arrangements.
