SRU’s Walters named all-regionSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University sophomore catcher Tyler Walters has been named first team All-Atlantic Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.Walters hit .439 this season with 42 runs, 15 doubles, 12 homers and 45 RBI this season. He will enter his junior season ranked second all-time at The Rock with a .403 career batting average and .745 slugging percentage. He is fifth on SRU’s career list with 25 home runs.
Butler grad Fennell joins region teamCALIFORNIA — Butler graduate and California (Pa.) University senior center fielder Mick Fennell has been named first team All-Atlantic Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.A four-year starter with the Vulcans, Fennell hit .385 this season eight homers, 33 RBI and 22 stolen bases. He led the PSAC in triples for the third straight year with seven and scored 57 runs.
SRU’s Davis 6th in equestrian finalsSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University Western Equestrian team sophomore MaryEllen Davis placed sixth in Intermediate Horsemanship at the 2016 Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association National Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park recently.Rock junior Katelynn Greenawald placed ninth in the AQHA High Point Rider competition.
County youths earn Positive Athlete honorPITTSBURGH — Three Butler County high school athletes — Butler tennis player Caroline Simms, Knoch lacrosse player Zack Inklovich and Mars boys tennis player Alex Gruber — are among the 2015-16 Positive Athlete Pittsburgh winners.There were 31 athletes selected for this honor among approximately 1,000 nominations from more than 150 Western Pennsylvania schools.The award is based on seven criteria — optimistic attitude, encouraging teammate, servant leader, heart for others, admits imperfections, always gives 100 percent and team is more important than individual.
