City man faces multiple charges after car chase
A Butler man was allegedly drunk when he stole a car Thursday night and led police on a high-speed chase through the city before he crashed into another vehicle.
City police said Vincent T. Wallace, 59, allegedly stole the Pontiac Sunfire that was parked at the intersection of Main and Jefferson streets about 9:45 p.m.
Wallace led police on the chase through streets on the eastern side of the city before he crashed into a Ford Explorer at the intersection of McKean and Jefferson streets, according to court documents filed Friday.
Police said Wallace didn’t stop after the accident and continued driving in the wrong direction on the one-way street. A city officer in pursuit struck the stolen vehicle with his cruiser, sending it onto the curb near Birch Street.
Wallace then fled on foot before he was tackled by officers on East Cunningham Street, police said.
A female passenger in the SUV was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with pain in her arms. The collision caused enough damage to the vehicle that she had to be extricated by city firefighters.
The woman driving the SUV was not injured.
The owner of the stolen car said he left it running to get money from the ATM at PNC Bank. He reported the theft to police, who began to check the area around East Brady Street.
Police spotted the car in the parking lot behind 340 N. McKean St. but it fled when the officer approached it.
A short time later an officer caught up with the car driving on East Brady and he activated his overhead lights and siren. However, the suspect did not yield.
Instead Wallace accelerated north onto McKean Street and turned onto Penn. He continued driving at a high rate of speed, nearly losing control of the vehicle multiple times, police said.
The chase continued on Pearl Street back to McKean. Police said Wallace drove through a stop sign before continuing south on the one-way northbound McKean Street.
Police said Wallace then drove through the intersection with East Jefferson Street and struck the SUV.
The stolen vehicle continued south on McKean Street with severe damage to the passenger side. At that point a police officer struck the vehicle with the front bumper of his cruiser.
Police said Wallace fled and the officer chased him on foot, ordering him to the ground. Another officer arrived and forcefully took the suspect down in front of 119 East Cunningham St.
Police said they recognized Wallace, who complained of chest pain and was taken to BMH.
Wallace made an unsolicited statement of “I’m sorry, officer. I did it. I stole the car and crashed it,” according to the complaint.
Police said Wallace denied drinking but said he had injected heroin earlier.
He is charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, as well as resisting arrest, DUI, and fleeing from an accident involving injury.
