Butler County Sports Hall of Fame inductions set
LYNDORA — The 56th Butler County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Lyndora American Legion Hall.
Twelve individuals are being inducted, swelling the Hall’s membership to over 400. The 1953 Chicora basketball squad will be the 11th team welcomed into the BCSHOF.
Chicora finished 8-0 in the regular season and won the Butler County Class C championship, defeating Parker. The Blue Devils also won the Christmas Bowl Tournament and took second place to Butler in the YMCA tournament that year. Jim Salsgiver was the team’s coach.
This year’s inductees include standout golfer Ray Weiland (deceased era), Jack Gaiser (veterans era) for basketball and baseball expertise, Ben McClure for lifetime achievement, Dave Haas, Bob Stanley and Denny Barger (Era 1), Steve Hall, Clint Eury and Amanda Sharbaugh (era 2), Danica Snyder, Don Barclay and Cole Baxter (era 3).
Stanley was a standout gymnast at Butler High School. Haas was an all-state swimmer and record holder in the sport at Butler. Barger excelled in football and basketball in the Karns City area.
McClure was a professional baseball scout for 44 years and has been elected to the MLB Scouting Hall of Fame and Pa. Sports Hall of Fame.
Hall was a baseball standout at Knoch and the Eagle County League, along with being a longtime coach. Eury was a stellar baseball player at Butler and Penn State University, Sharbaugh a record-setting soccer goal scorer at Knoch and at Gannon University.
Snyder was a standout distance runner at Butler and at Duquesne University. Don Barclay starred as an offensive lineman at Seneca Valley, West Virginia University and with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. Baxter is Butler’s all-time record holder in wrestling wins and went on to a solid career at Kent State University.
