CRANBERRY TWP — A 23-year-old township man will spend one to two years in prison after pleading guilty to having sex last year with a 14-year-old girl.

Thomas Lee Zarnick pleaded guilty to unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.

He was sentenced Tuesday by Butler County Judge William Shaffer to prison. He will also serve eight years of probation upon release.

Zarnick, who has been credited with the 250 days he has served in county prison while waiting resolution for this case, is to be paroled in about three months.

He will then be required to register his whereabouts with state police. However, court officials Tuesday were unclear if Zarnick would be responsible to do this for a decade or the rest of his life.

Neither the victim nor the defendant, who was accompanied by his parents to court, gave a statement during sentencing.

According to police, Zarnick initiated contact with the victim over Facebook. The pair soon began trading nude pictures over the site and eventually agreed to meet in person.

The pair met twice in early September and had sex in a location in Cranberry, police said. Text messages exchanged during that time show that Zarnick was aware of the age of his victim, documents show.

On Sept. 18 of last year, state police contacted Zarnick regarding a separate incident during which time he admitted to the relationship with the 14-year-old girl.

During the investigation, both the victim and her family consented to a search of the victim’s cell phone, which corroborated Zarnick’s statements given to police.
