Merten sits 8th in PIAA girls golf
Mars sophomore Bridget Merten shot an 83 at Heritage Hills Resort in York Monday in the first round of the PIAA Girls Class AAA Golf Championships.
Merten is tied for eighth heading into the final round today, 10 strokes off Lauren Walter of Canon McMillan.
Freeport sophomore Audrey Clawson shot an 89 in the Class AA championships and is in 13th place.
Macky Fouse of Central Valley leads the event with a 75.
Mars senior Josh Bartley shot an 81 and is nine strokes off the lead of Ryan Dornes of Manheim Township.
Boys Soccer
Matt Dempsey scored the tying goal with 1:11 remaining in regulation and Slippery Rock and Wilmington played to a 2-2 tie at Slippery Rock University.
Luc LaChance scored in the first half for the Rockets (9-4-4, 5-1-4), who will open the District 10 playoffs next week.
Private Schools
Butler Catholic School participated in the Catholic Schools Cross-Country Championship meet on Saturday at Coopers Lake Campground. The competition included 45 schools from the Pittsburgh Diocese.
The Butler Catholic varsity girls, composed of seventh- and eighth-graders, were paced by Erin LeMay (sixth) and Emma LeMay (18th) in the 138-runner event.
The Butler Catholic JV boys, featuring fourth- through sixth-graders placed ninth overall, led by Tim Patterson in 23rd of 240 runners. Caitlin Peratt was tops for Butler Catholic among JV girls by finishing 29th of 232.
It marked the final cross country meet for BCS eighth-graders Erin LeMay, Emma LeMay, Sophia Wiest, Gussie Beaver, Dylan Schaffner, Dante Grenci and Jacob Book.
