Smith wins AAU gold in N.C.

Hayden Smith, a Rimersburg resident and incoming junior at Union High School, reached a height of six feet, 10¾ inches to take first place in the high jump at the AAU Junior Olympics Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C.

Pirates’ Bednar placed on IL

David Bednar, closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates and graduate of Mars Area High School, was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with inflammation in his lower back.

Bednar, who leads the team with 17 saves and has an ERA of 2.70, had not pitched since working an inning in Friday’s loss to Philadelphia and Wednesday’s move was made retroactive to July 31.

Bercurys claim wins at The Meadows

Bill Bercury, of Slippery Rock, earned a training and owning victory in harness racing Wednesday at The Meadows when Desperado Hall took first place in an $8,200 Conditioned Trot.

Bercury also trains Lady Newton, which captured a $12,000 Filly and Mare Conditioned Pace. The four-year-old is owned by Renee Bercury, also of Slippery Rock.
