DONEGAL TWP — Volunteer firefighters had to use chain saws to rescue a 25-year-old man injured in thick woods after he crashed his dirt bike late Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Rescuers also had to carry the victim, who suffered an apparent broken leg in the wreck about 5 p.m. off Airport Lane in Donegal Township. He was taken to an Armstrong County hospital for treatment.

Authorities did not release his name, and his condition was not known.

The man and a friend were riding dirt bikes on a deer path in the woods a mile or so off Airport Lane, near Chicora Fenelton Road, when he crashed, said Chief Cody Craig of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department

“It's pretty rough terrain,” Craig said.

The victim, who was wearing a helmet, was riding behind his buddy. It was not immediately clear how the wreck happened, authorities said, but the bike did not appear to be damaged.

The man's friend eventually contacted 911 to report the accident.

Firefighters employed chainsaws to clear a path that was needed in the rescue. The man was conscious and alert when emergency crews found him.

Petrolia Ambulance paramedics also assisted.

Rescuers loaded the man onto a Stokes basket and carried him up a hill before he was placed aboard a utility task vehicle, which used the access path made by firefighters to transport him to an awaiting ambulance.

He was eventually taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township.
