BUTLER TWP —Katherine Groves, a Butler School District elementary music teacher, has received a 2012 Citation of Excellence from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.
The award recognizes excellence in music education.
In a letter of recommendation to the assocation, Kirk Fox, principal at McQuistion Elementary School, said, “Kathie genuinely loves her job and the children she interacts with on a daily basis. She interjects a tremendous sense of humor to help engage and keep her students focused, relaxed and excited about learning.”
At Butler, Groves also assists with the symphonic band at the intermediate high school and is an associate band director with the Golden Tornado Marching Band.
Since the 2003-04 school year, she has taught band, orchestra, chorus, and general music at McQuistion, Connoquenessing, Summit Township and Oakland Township schools.

Broad Street Elementary School in Butler raised more than $3,000 in May for the American Cancer Society.
Teacher Megan Ratica led the school in a Relay Recess program, the elementary school part of the national Relay for Life.
Relay Recess enabled the children to raise money for the charity and to learn about cancer prevention.

On June 21, the Butler Duplicate Bridge Club winners were:
First (three-way tie): Jean Brackett and Patsy Bachman, Hazel Allen and Alex Bealles; and Bob Freemon and Nick Tredennick.
