Ride for Cure Still on Course

Riders head out on the road for Ride for a Cure from the Family Bowlaway in Butler on Sept. 19. The event raised $36,000 and organizers are not done yet. In addition to collecting donations, the group plans two more Bike Nights at Family Bowlaway from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 and 28.

Participants and organizers dubbed Sept. 19's Riding for the Cure motorcycle ride “Freezin' for a Reason” because of the unseasonably low temperatures present before the start of the ninth annual cancer charity ride.

But they could bask in the warmth of knowing they raised more than $36,000 this year to help fight the disease by the time the ride ended at the Beer Garden Sports

Bar & Grille on Route 38 in Washington Township.More than 200 motorcyclists roared off at 11 a.m. from the parking lot of Family Bowlaway, 540 Fairground Hill Road.Lynda Kerr, president of Riding for the Cure, said the total was bit down from last year's event. The ride is usually staged on the last Saturday in July, she said, “But this year it had to be postponed because of COVID and all the restrictions” and “because it was freezing” before the start of the ride.

“Still, in nine years we've raised $316,000 to help support cancer charities,” said Kerr, who took up the fight against cancer when one of her best friends was diagnosed with breast cancer. And that was money raised without two other fundraising events, a bowlathon in June and a Mother's Day event in May that had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And people will still have a chance to add to that total at least through the end of October.Kerr said Riding for the Cure will be having two more Bike Nights at Family Bowlaway from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 and 28.“We wouldn't be able to do this without the support of the community,” Kerr said.
