Margery Succop McCarthy

Margery Succop McCarthy, 92, of Pittsburgh and, later in life, Northern Neck, Va., and Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1928, in Pittsburgh, and lived most of her adult life in Oakmont, Pa.

She was a graduate of Winchester Thurston School, and went on to graduate from Vassar College in 1949, where she studied theater and dance.

After college, she established a dance school for children in Aspinwall, where she taught ballet, toe and tap dancing. She expanded her curriculum to include extremely popular exercise classes for women in Aspinwall and Oakmont.

The highlight of her career was as a cast member on Fred Roger's first TV show called, “The Children's Corner,” hosted by Josie Carey. It was a live TV show on WQED in Pittsburgh, from 1955 to 1961. On the show, Margie taught basic tap and ballet for children, and enjoyed being part of Fred's cheerful banter.

She was also active in the Junior League, Oakmont Country Club and The Iron City Fishing Club, and was always devoted to her church. In the Pittsburgh area, she was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Oakmont, and upon returning to Pittsburgh later in life, became a member of St. Thomas in the Fields Episcopal Church in Gibsonia.

Margery was the beloved wife of John P. McCarthy, who passed away in 2012.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Succop Schroeder of Winston Salem, N.C.; and her three children, Natalie (Walter) Sloan of Gibsonia, Matthew (Colleen) McCarthy of Butler, and Andrew (Paget) McCarthy of Frazer Township; her grandchildren, C.J. (DeAnn) Sloan, Eric (Jordan Meier) Sloan, Brian (Nancy) Sloan, Brandon McCarthy, Megan McCarthy, Samantha McCarthy, Miguel (Jeanette) Gonzales, Nyssa McCarthy, Luke McCarthy, Erik (Abigail) McCarthy and Bridget McCarthy; and six great- grandchildren.

She will be remembered for her lovely laugh, kind and generous spirit, and her love of family and her Lord.
