County gridders earn UAA honorsSeneca Valley graduate Andrew Berkebile, a senior center at Case Western Reserve, has been named first team All-University Athletic Conference in football this aseason.The 6-foot-0, 270-pound Berkebile started all 10 games for the Spartans this season. Case Western finished the year 6-4.Brandon Flick, a senior defensive back from Knoch, earned honorable mention All-UAA. He started all 10 games this season as well.
Clairton picks up 60th straight winPITTSBURGH — Clairton overcame an early deficit to roll past Sto-Rox, 58-21, in the WPIAL Class A championship football game Friday at Heinz Field.The win was the Bears’ 60th in a row, breaking the PIAA record for most consecutive wins.North Allegheny rallied from a 14-7 deficit to defeat Woodland Hills, 21-14, in Class AAAA. becoming the first Quad-A team to ever win three consecutive WPIAL titles.In other WPIAL finals, West Allegheny defeated West Mifflin, 34-8, in Class AAA and Aliquippa stopped Washington, 34-7, in Class AA.
Camacho dead after going off life supportSAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Former world champion boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho died after being taken off life support Saturday morning.Camacho's mother decided to have doctors cut off life support for Camacho once three more of his sons got a last chance to see him.Though opposed by Camacho's eldest son, Maria Matias, the boxer's mother, said she had decided it was time for doctors to disconnect the machines that have kept him alive since he was shot in the face earlier in the week.“I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine,” Matias said. “My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,” she added.
