What does it take?

Chartiers Valley has decided to dump its longtime baseball coach, Jim Jaskowski, despite the Colts winning their first-ever WPIAL championship this past spring.

Jaskowski was 96-37 in his last six years at CV. A lack of leadership and a needed change in culture were cited as reasons for his dismissal. Huh?

Didn’t something like this just happen at Moniteau?

I know Dan Beebe resigned as softball coach there, but his was the only varsity spring head coaching job not immediately renewed.

I guess winning isn’t everything after all.

Rich get richer

Seneca Valley girls soccer coach Dave Sylvester stepped down after last season, ending a successful run that included a 96-14-3 record and three successive trips to the WPIAL finals within the past five years.

All the Raiders did was hire Mark Perry, a guy who has won more than 500 games as a boys and girls soccer coach at a handful of schools.

Just keep the ball rolling.

Good luck, Lutz

Shawn Lutz will try to keep the ball rolling for Slippery Rock University football this season. His first game as head coach is this weekend against New Haven. All Lutz is inheriting is a team that’s won consecutive state championships, been to the NCAA Division II playoffs three years in a row and opens the season with a 17-game home winning streak, longest such active streak in all of Division II.

No pressure there.

Stand up, Colin

Just a suggestion, but 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick should get on his feet and show respect to the national anthem when it is played — as should every American.

The man is free to talk about racial oppression and express his views on that subject in a public forum — and, yes, it is his “right” to sit while the anthem is played.

But, I’m sorry, people have died for that flag and what it represents. Kaepernick and the rest of us enjoy freedom as a result. Speak your mind, Colin. But respect why you can do so.

Coincidence?

This past Thursday marked one of the lightest slate of games in the Major League Baseball season — four — on the same night as the busiest slate of preseason games in the NFL. MLB couldn’t have feared going up against NFL preseason ... could it?

Back woes

Ex-Pirate Neil Walker has had his brilliant season with the New York Mets curtailed by a herniated dusc in his back that will require surgery.

Walker will be a free agent in the off-season. His price tag may go down because of his back.
